In 1998 he was among the 12 finalists, and was discovered by two producers, Alberto Salerno and Mara Maionchi, who coached him until he got a record deal with EMI in 2001. EMI released his first single, "Perdono", in July 2001 and was a huge hit. Within a few weeks, the single shot to number one at both radio and sales singles charts. It stayed at the top of the charts for four straight weeks and went on to become the third best selling single in Italy in 2001, and a chart topper throughout Europe the following year, making the album Rosso Relativo a huge success. In late 2003, Ferro released his second album, 111 Centoundici, which was also a big hit and affirmed his place as one of Italy's leading pop stars. In 2004, Ferro released his first English-language single, "Universal Prayer", in Europe. The single, a duet with British R&B star Jamelia, was recorded to promote the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
