Toby Keith music biography continued...
release of the single "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)", his personal response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he has instead been identified by his enraging political statement.
Born Toby Keith Covel on July 8, 1961 in Clinton, Oklahoma, he developed an interest in music at a young age learning to play the guitar at eight years old. Finding work in the oil fields after graduation Toby eventually held the position of operation manager. Meanwhile, he formed the Easy Money Band and performed in local bars. Finding himself unemployed in 1982, Keith decided to commit to his music career and began recording demos. After numerous refusals, his tape ended up in the hands of producer Harold Shedd who helped Keith land a deal with Mercury Records. His self-titled debut which included "Should've Been a Cowboy" was released in 1993 and proved to be an instant success with sales of over one million. Boomtown, which delivered "Who's That Man" was issued in 1994 and was followed by his second platinum selling record Blue Moon in 1996. The 1997 album, Dream Walkin' generated the hits "We Were In Love" and his duet with Sting "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying".
Switching to the DreamWorks label in 1999, he released How Do You Like Me Now? which earned the Academy of Country Music Award for Album of the Year while Keith was named Male Vocalist of the Year. Pull My Chain appeared in 2002 spawning the number one hit "My List". The infamous single "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" was featured on Unleashed which also generated the hits "Who's Your Daddy?" and "Beer For My Horses" featuring Willie Nelson. Sales remained very strong for both Shock'n Y'All and Honkytonk University. Towards the end of 2005, Toby started his own label Show Dog Nashville and released White Trash with Money.
