Toni Braxton Biography (Continued)
in Severn, Maryland on October 7, 1966. She and her five siblings were raised by their mother and minister father in a religious household. Toni began singing in her church choir along with her sisters and would eventually perform in various talent shows. After graduating from Glen Burnie High School, Toni studied musical education at Bowie State University however eventually dropped out when she was discovered singing to herself at a gas station by songwriter Bill Pettaway who was impressed with her vocal talent. Toni and her sisters Traci, Trina, Towanda, and Tamar were signed to Arista Records in 1990 as The Braxtons, releasing their debut single “The Good Life” shortly afterwards. The song did not gain much attention however producers L.A. Reid and Babyface were impressed with Toni’s sound and recruited her to record “Love Shoulda Brought You Home” for Eddie Murphy’s film Boomerang. She was immediately signed to LaFace Records and began recording her solo debut album.

Toni Braxton, released in July of 1993, received much commercial acclaim peaking in the number one position on the Billboard 200 for an impressive two weeks. The lead single “Another Sad Love Song” became a top hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B Singles charts while the second single “Breathe Again” scored in the Top Five on both charts. Other popular singles include “You Mean the World to Me”, “Seven Whole Days”, and “How Many Ways”. Selling over 10 million copies worldwide, the album was eventually certified 8x platinum. By 1994, Braxton had achieved two Grammy Awards, the first for Best New Artist and the second Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “Another Sad Love Song”. In 1995, she added to her collection of Grammy Awards winning Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “Breathe Again”.

Her follow-up, Secrets, was released in 1996 and is deemed as her most successful album to date. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart as the first single “You’re Makin’ Me High” became a number one hit on the Hot 100 and the R&B Singles chart. “Un-Break My Heart” followed with phenomenal success occupying the number one spot for eleven weeks. The album also included the popular single “How Could An Angel Break My Heart” featuring Kenny G. Toni’s Grammy Award wining streak continued earning Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Un-Break My Heart” and Best Female R&B Performance for “You’re Makin’ Me High”.

In 1997, Braxton filed a lawsuit against LaFace Records aiming to get out of her contract as she felt that the label no longer met her demands. However LaFace countersued for breach of contract which eventually led to Braxton filing for bankruptcy. The legal conflict was resolved in 1999 with a renewed contract worth $25 million. In 2000, she released her third album The Heat, receiving much attention with the lead single “He Wasn’t Man Enough” which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Although the album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, its sales were not as promising as her previous releases. More Than a Woman was issued in 2002 to much dismay with its first and only single “Hit the Freeway” placing at an unimpressive 86th position on the Billboard Hot 100. In April 2005, under the new label Blackground/Universal, Toni released the single “Please” off of her fifth album Libra which was later issued in September. The single flopped attributing its lackluster performance to inadequate promotion by the label. On the other hand, the album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified gold. As of August 2006, Braxton replaced Wayne Newton’s headlining act at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino with her show Toni Braxton: Revealed which will run six nights a week until March 2007.
