Tracy Byrd music biography continued...
State University. One of his friends coaxed him into singing a cover of Hank Williams' "Your Cheatin' Heart" at a local mall recording studio. The owner of the studio was so impressed with his version that he entered Byrd into a local talent contest. Byrd discovered on that stage that he really liked the attention and applause that came with performing. He began playing nightclubs in Southeast Texas, including working with then-struggling artist Mark Chesnutt. After Chesnutt secured a record deal, Byrd took over as the house band at Cutters Nightclub in Beaumont, landing his own record deal with MCA Nashville in 1992. Byrd broke through with the #1 hit single "Holdin' Heaven" off his self-titled debut album, but he became a superstar with his sophomore effort, No Ordinary Man. All four singles from the album reached Top Five: "Lifestyles of the Not So Rich and Famous", "Watermelon Crawl" (also his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100, at #81), "The First Step" and "The Keeper of the Stars". This last song, a love ballad, became a popular choice for fans to use at their weddings and also won Song of the Year at the Country Music Association in 1995. The tunes propelled the album itself to double platinum status, and Byrd's career into the country stratosphere.
With MCA Nashville heavy with superstar acts, Byrd shifted to RCA in 1999. It took several years before he returned to the Top 10 when "Just Let Me Be in Love" peaked in late 2001. But by the end of 2002, he scored his second # 1 hit with another novelty hit, "Ten Rounds With Jose Cuervo." However, after making two more albums for RCA, he parted ways with the label. In 2006, he released Different Things on his own Blind Mule label. Besides his music Byrd is known as the CMA spokesperson for the Special Olympics, proving his heart is just as big as his talent.
