At the urging of his family, he competed in a number of local talent contests, and was discovered at one of these by producer Troy Taylor, who helped him get a record contract with Atlantic. Songz's debut album, I Gotta Make It was released in July 2005, and debuted at number 20 on the Billboard 200. The album's lead single, "Just Gotta Make It," debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 87, and on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts at number 21, while another single, "Gotta Go," debuted at number 67 on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs at number 99. For his sophomore album, Trey Dey, Songz teamed up with superstar producers like Bryan-Michael Cox, R. Kelly and James Harris, and saw his album debut at number 11 on the Billboard 200. Trey Day's second single, included "Can't Help But Wait", which immediately charted at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and at 2 on the R&B charts, receive massive airplay was released that November, it became Songz's highest charting debut on the Billboard Hot 100, and his first-charting R&B single on the R&B charts. In 2009, "Can't Help But Wait" earned Songz his first Grammy Award nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 51st Grammy Awards ceremony. Songz arrival as an up-and-coming R&B great was cemented by production offers from such powerhouses as The Game, Chris Brown and Ne-Yo, who love his special brand of cool R&B blended with hip hop urgency.
