USA For Africa music biography continued...
"We Are the World" in 1985. The idea was the brainchild of Belafonte who approached friends Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, and producer Quincy Jones about it. Richie and Jackson wrote "We Are the World" in two hours. It was recorded at A&M Studios in Los Angeles with a cast of artists that included Richie, Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, and Bob Dylan. On March 23, 1985, the tune debuted at number 21 on the Billboard charts; it hit number one in April 1985 in both the U.S. and U.K. "We Are the World" eventually sold over 7 million copies and earned $50 million in profits, which went to the USA for Africa Foundation for the relief of famine and disease in Africa.
