Underworld music biography continued...
Rick Smith and DJ Darren Emerson. In 1992, the trio debuted with two singles, "Dirty"/"Minneapolis" and "Bigmouth"/"Eclipse," both released on Junior Boys Own Records. They followed in 1993 with "Rez" and "MMM...Skyscraper I Love You," which caused a minor sensation in the dance community, and paved the way for their debut album later that year called Dubnobasswithmyheadman. The album was a critical and commercial success, crossing over into the British pop charts. In 1995, the album was released in the U.S., and a year later Underworld followed with the single "Born Slippy." When the tune was selected for the soundtrack of the seminal film Trainspotting in 1996, the group broke through commercially in the U.S. and the U.K. The track has since sold over a million copies, and appeared on countless compilations, mashups, and remixes. In 1996, the group also released the album Second Toughest in the Infants, another critical and commercial success, and toured Europe and North America in support of the disc, reveling in the newfound popularity that "Born Slippy" had generated.
Underworld released the album Beaucoup Fish in 1999 and embarked on a spirited and well-received tour in 1999, which resulted in a live CD and DVD drawn from several dates on the tour (Everything, Everything). After the release and promotion of the package, Emerson decided to leave Underworld to focus on his solo projects and record label. Hyde and Smith decided to continue as a duo. They released a new album, A Hundred Days Off, to general applause, keeping the Underworld sound intact. Hyde and Smith continued to perform and record together working on soundtracks and studio albums, always mindful of broadening the ever-expanding horizons of electronica.
