velop his rhyming skills and incorporated the DJ/rapper into his Oomp Camp. Unk became a regular in Atlanta's mixtape circuit, appearing on his own as well as on other DJs' material. After his first hit record and a guest spot on the LP On Top of Our Game by Dem Franchize Boyz (Unk's old high school classmates), he pushed for his own album. For this, Oomp gathered together some of southern hip hop’s greatest rappers, including Jazze Pha, Yola the Great, Baby D and Dem Franchize Boyz, The result, released in October 2006,was Unk’s Beat'n Down Yo Block.
The hit single off ‘Block’, “Walk It Out,” became a club favorite and a national chart topper, enjoying rotation on MTV 2 and BET. It seemed no one could listen to the tune without getting up and dancing. Other Unk songs on the album included the title track, which Unk has described as a real street song, “2 Step,” for more laid back partygoers, and “Thinking of You,” a more introspective rap about the special people in Unk’s family. Unk’s hip hop style is hard to classify. It’s not snap nor crunk, and doesn’t lay claims to any of the trends in Southern rap. Unk himself describes it as just good, fun “club music,” and he intends on staying on the scene with it for quite some time, recording and touring. Despite the revolving-door mentality that plagues hip hop, Unk is determined to stay in the game by being true to himself and not getting a big head over his successes. That’s a good thing to know because his triumphs are bound to be many.
