Vicky Leandros music biography continued...
Leandros and her family moved to Luxemborg when she was just a child. Her father, a musician and composer, encouraged her musical career, and Leandros recorded her first song, "Messer, Gabel, Schere, Licht" in 1965. In 1967 she received an offer to sing for Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "L'amour est bleu". She finished in fourth place but the song became one of the biggest worldwide hits of the year, and led to her own television show in 1970 called Ich Bin, which was broadcast in 13 European countries. In 1972 Leandros represented Luxembourg at Eurovision for the second time and won the contest with the song "Après Toi". Translated into English as "Come What May," it was also a big hit in the UK reaching number 2 on the charts. Leandros recorded the song in seven languages and it was the beginning of a string of hit singles recorded in multiple languages throughout the 70s, as her fame spread further afield, establishing her in Japan, South Africa, the Middle East, and Canada. In fact, the only market that she failed to excel in was the United States, despite an attempt at country rock called Across the Water, which received excellent reviews. Still, in every other corner of the globe, Leandros was a superstar.
Leandros appeared to slow her pace in the late seventies, but she came back strong in 1982-83 with the singles "Verlorenes Paradies" and "Ver Van Het Leven." After a brief time out to raise her children, Leandros returned to the spotlight with 1991's "Prosexe," 1993's "Andres," 1994's "Du Bist Mein Schoenster Gedanke," and 1995's "We're Gonna Stay Together," a duet with singer Tony Christie. She also racked up a huge success with a German-language version of "My Heart Will Go On," from the Titanic movie. Leandros continues to remain a vital force on the international recording scene. In 2000 she started producing her own records and her album Jetzt / Now, was a critical and commercial international success. Leandros returned to Eurovision in 2006 and released a new album in 2009 called Moege Der Himmel, sating the appetites of a worldwide audience that still hangs on her every beautiful note.
