Weezer music biography continued...
of the dark grunge era. The band was formed in February 1992 by Rivers Cuomo (lead vocals, guitar), Patrick Wilson (drums), Matt Sharp (bass), and Jason Cropper (guitar).
The band began their career performing in various bars and clubs in the Los Angeles area until discovered by A&R rep Todd Sullivan of Geffen Records. He immediately signed them to DGC in 1993 which later became known as Interscope. Their self-titled debut, also referred to as the Blue Album was released in May 1994 and featured the hits "Undone - The Sweater Song" and "Buddy Holly". The video for the latter received heavy airplay on music TV stations furthering the popularity of the band into the spotlight. While recording the album, bassist Cropper left the band and was replaced by Brian Bell.
The album was eventually certified triple platinum and is deemed Weezer's all time best seller.
In 1996, Pinkerton was issued receiving much criticism for its dark, harsh sound very much dissimilar to the previous record. Rolling Stone Magazine declared it "one of the worst albums of 1996". However through word of mouth, the album was eventually granted the recognition it deserved as it was considered by fans as one of their best efforts. In 2004, Rolling Stone altered their rating of the album as well as inducted the album into the Rolling Stone Hall of Fame. Following the Pinkerton tour, Weezer decided to take a break as its members wished to work on their individual side projects. In April 1998, Matt Sharp made his departure permanent to focus on his band, The Rentals, and was replaced by Mikey Welsh. Trying to record material for a new album, the band experienced many creative disagreements which led to a second break. During this period, Cuomo fell into a deep depression. In 2000, the band reunited when they received a generous incentive to play the Fuji Festival in Japan. They continued to rehearse and play live shows however under the name Goat Punishment. In June 2000, the group was asked to join the Warped Tour and accepted as Weezer.
Weezer proceeded with their own tour for the remainder of the summer of 2000. They introduced 14 new songs, one of which was released on their next album. A few other songs appeared on following albums however the majority were posted as mp3 live recordings on the band's official website. Weezer issued their second self-titled album, otherwise known as The Green Album, in 2001. The album featured the hit songs "Hash Pipe" and "Island in the Sun" which both had popular accompanying videos on MTV. The album became their first Top Ten hit peaking at number four on the album charts and was eventually certified platinum by the RIAA. In August 2001, Mikey Welsh checked into a psychiatric hospital after several unexplained disappearances and was eventually replaced by Scott Shriner.
Prior to the release of their fourth album, Maladroit, former bassist Matt Sharp sued the band in April 2002 claiming that they owed him money for some of the songs that he had co-written with Rivers. The law suit was later settled out of court. On May 14, Maladroit was released to moderate reviews yet was instilled as one of their worst selling albums. Two years later, Weezer released a DVD which captures their touring experiences since their debut in 1994 until the Maladroit Enlightenment Tour in 2002. Make Believe was released in May 2005. The first single "Beverly Hills" topped the Billboard Modern Rock charts at number one and remained present on the charts for several months. The album also features hits "Perfect Situation", a Modern Rock number one hit for four weeks, and "We Are All on Drugs". It is uncertain whether Weezer will be releasing any new material in the future. The band is currently on a break as Rivers Cuomo has re-enrolled at Harvard University to complete his English degree and other members are focusing on their own endeavors.
