Wings music biography continued...
for the Moody Blues, and drummer Denny Seiwell, and released their first album, Wild Life, to horrible reviews in December 1971. In 1972, the group released three singles in England, the most notable of which was "Hi Hi Hi,." Near the end of these sessions, in October 1972, Wings recorded the theme song to the James Bond film "Live and Let Die," which became a sizable worldwide hit. Renamed Paul McCartney and Wings, the group followed with Spring 1973's LP Red Rose Speedway, which yielded the first U.S. #1 Wings hit, the romantic ballad "My Love". Wings continued to win over fans at the end of 1973, with the release of Band on the Run, which spent four weeks atop the U.S. charts and eventually went triple platinum. The group, now featuring guitarist Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Geoff Britton, released "Junior's Farm" which was a hit in Britain in 1975, and the album Venus and Mars, which contained the U.S. #1 single "Listen to What the Man Said." The new Wing's lineup would surge ahead in 1976 with Wings at the Speed of Sound, a huge album that featured two McCartney—penned hits "Silly Love Songs" and "Let 'Em In," reminiscent of his songwriting days with the Beatles.
Wings supported Wings at the Speed of Sound with their first international tour, which broke many attendance records and was captured on the live triple album Wings Over America (1976). In late 1977, Wings released "Mull of Kintyre," which became the biggest-selling British single of all time (at the time of its release), selling over two million copies. In 1978 Wings followed "Mull of Kintyre" with London Town, which became another platinum record. After this, McCartney took time off to work on some solo projects. He was about to reconvene Wings when John Lennon was assassinated in New York in 1980 and McCartney decided that he no longer wanted to tour. Of the nine albums credited to Wings during the group's life, all went top 10 in either the UK or the US, with five consecutive albums topping the US charts.
