With their classical brand of upbeat punk leavened by a violin used as a rhythm instrument, Yellowcard is winning more and more converts to their sound by defying convention and classification. The band was formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1997, but didn’t hit their stride until they moved to southern California in early 2000 and solidified a line-up consisting of vocalist/guitarist Ryan Key, vocalist/violinist Sean Mackin, guitarist Ben Harper, drummer Longineu Parsons, and bassist Warren Cooke. ned a year later with the Underdog EP for Fueled by Ramen. But things didn’t really start to click until Yellowcard went through some lineup changes, signed with Capitol and came out with Ocean Avenue in late 2004. The album went on to be certified double platinum, with singles such as "Way Away," "Only One," and the title track continuing to impact MTV and Top 40 radio for the rest of the year. After two years of touring, the group went back into the studio to record Lights And Sounds, a concept album about the band’s negative feelings toward Los Angeles. Lights and Sounds entered the Billboard 200 at number five and earned the number one spot on the Alternative Album chart, quickly gaining momentum on the 2.5-million-selling Ocean Avenue. Yellowcard had finally arrived.
The band’s fifth studio album, Paper Walls, appeared in July 2007 Soon after its release, Paper Walls became the second most popular album on iTunes and the most popular album in the alternative section. However, Yellowcard announced an interview in April 2008 that they would be going on an "indefinite hiatus” so that band members could tend to their personal lives. The band tried to quell fans’ fears by saying they were not permanently splitting up. "It's awesome to know we sacrificed and followed our hearts to end up where we are right now," says Ryan Key. "We definitely feel lucky, but we've worked hard as hell to make that luck happen." Fans hope that Yellowcard’s dedication to their craft will will out and they will be back on tour and in the studio sometime soon.
