Efron was born October 18, 1987 in San Luis Obispo, California. He began to sing at age 11 and quickly enrolled in singing lessons to perfect his ability. Shortly afterward he was cast in the musical Gypsy and went on to star in several school play productions. His drama teacher impressed by his talent contacted an agent friend who landed Efron several guest appearances on popular TV shows such as ER, Firefly, The Guardian, and CSI: Miami. In 2002, he was cast a recurring role on the WB series Summerland alongside Lori Loughlin. In 2003 he starred in the TV movie Miracle Run for which he was nominated the Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Movie, Miniseries or Special.

His big break was in 2006 both acting and singing in the Disney Movie High School Musical. His songs "Get'cha Head In the Game" and "Breaking Free" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the same week. The latter quickly climbed the charts to the number four spot in a record breaking two weeks. Efron's genuine talent soon became uncertain as it was revealed that Canadian singer/songwriter Andrew Seeley's voice was blended with Zac's on all of the High School Musical tracks. Despite these claims, Efron's fame and popularity persisted. His future endeavors include starring in the High School Musical sequel as well as in the film version of Hairspray co-starring Amanda Bynes, Queen Latifah, and John Travolta.
