The Beauty and the Beast soundtrack accompanies a movie that was the only animated feature to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Released in 1991, The Beauty and the Beast movie was Disney’s thirtieth animated feature and was made during the Disney renaissance which lasted from 1989 to 1999. The Beauty and the Beast film ranked #22 on the American Film Institute's list of best musicals and #34 on its list of the best romantic American movies.

The story of the Beauty and the Beast movies revolves around Belle, a girl who is dissatisfied with life in a small provincial French town, constantly trying to fend off the misplaced "affections" of conceited Gaston. The Beast is a prince who was placed under a spell because he could not love. A wrong turn taken by Maurice, Belle's father, causes the two to meet. In the beginning Belle views him as nothing more than a monster, he views her as difficult and stubborn. But the two soon taste the bitter-sweetness of finding you can change and learning you were wrong.

The Beauty and the Beast soundtrack featured the work of the composer/lyricist team of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman in their last turn together before Ashman’s death at age 41. It includes the beautiful rendition of the title song by Celine Dion and other great performances from Broadway pros Angela Landsbury and the late Jerry Orbach.
