Nominated for an Academy Award in 1996, the Braveheart soundtrack was as bold and innovative as the Braveheart movie that carried its name. Written and directed by Mel Gibson, Braveheart the movie won five Academy Awards at the 68th Academy Awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director, and had been nominated for an additional five.

In the Braveheart film, Mel Gibson portrays a legendary Scot, William Wallace, who gained recognition when he came to the forefront of the First War of Scottish Independence by opposing Edward I of England (played by Patrick McGoohan) and subsequently abetted by Edward's daughter-in-law Princess Isabelle (played by Sophie Marceau) and a claimant to the Scottish throne, Robert the Bruce (played by Angus MacFadyen). Betrayal and rebellion are the mainstays of this riveting 14th Century tale.

Composer James (Titanic) Horner was responsible for composing the score heard on the Braveheart soundtrack. Horner utilized the amazing breadth of the London Symphony Orchestra, the Choristers of Westminster Abbey and a small ensemble of traditional folk instrumentalists to chart and emotionally complex musical course.
