The Dirty Dancing soundtrack is one of the bestselling movie soundtracks of all time. It goes with the hugely popular Dirty Dancing movie, which was released in 1987, and starred Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, Cynthia Rhodes, and Jerry Orbach. A low budget romance made with no major stars, the Dirty Dancing movie went on to gross $300 million worldwide and become the first film to sell over one million copies on video. It also spawned a sequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. The 20th anniversary of the film’s release in August 2007 was celebrated with the release of a special Dirty Dancing dvd and video game.

The Dirty Dancing story focuses on a sheltered and privileged teenage girl (Baby) who is on a family summer vacation when she meets a working class dance instructor (Johnny) who helps her make the transition into womanhood both physically and emotionally, despite her parents’ efforts to hold her back. About one third of the movie is dedicated to dancing scenes, and the finale is considered by many to be one of the most sensational dance scenes in movie history.

The Dirty Dancing soundtrack was phenomenally successful, generating two multi-platinum albums and multiple singles, including, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", which won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song, as well as a Grammy Award for best duet. It became one of the era’s most performed songs and perennial radio favorite.
