The Dreamgirls soundtrack accompanied a film that received eight 2007 Academy Award nominations covering six categories, tied for the most of any film for the year. The Dreamgirls movie nominations included Best Supporting Actor (Eddie Murphy), Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Hudson) and three nominations for Best Song ("Listen", "Love You I Do", and "Patience"). Based on a Broadway musical, which in turn was loosely based on the story of Diana Ross and The Supremes in the early days of Motown, the Dreamgirls film follows the lives of Effie White, Deena Jones, and Lorrell Robinson, three young women who form an R&B singing trio from Detroit, Michigan called "The Dreamettes". The group becomes famous, but falls apart when a record executive’s decisions lead to infighting between the singers.

The Dreamgirls soundtrack is a high octane mixture of powerful and passionate soul that puts most other R&B albums to shame. Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson take off their gloves in singing the Dreamgirls lyrics to "It's All Over," and Hudson herself belts it out on the song that won her the Oscar, “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going.” The "One Night Only" ballad gets reinvented as the dance-floor burner "One Night Only (Disco)” encapsulating the sheer energy of the Dreamgirls movie soundtrack.
