The Fox and the Hound soundtrack is associated with a classic Disney film. Released in July 1981, the animated Disney Fox and the Hound film was the 24th cartoon feature put out by the studio and ranked #5 on its all time animated feature rankings. Based somewhat on the Daniel P. Mannix novel The Fox and the Hound, at the time of its release, the film was the most expensive animated feature ever produced by Disney. The Fox and the Hound 2, billed as a midquel, was released by Disney’s Toon Studios in December 2006.

The original Fox and the Hound plot revolves around an unlikely friendship between a red fox (Tod), who lives on Widow Tweed’s farm and a bloodhound puppy (Copper) who lives with an unpleasant hunter (Slade) next door. Slade teaches Copper to be a hunting dog and to want to kill Tod, but in the end the friendship between the two animals prevails. In the Fox and the Hound film Mickey Rooney is the voice of Tod. Kurt Russell is Copper and Jack Albertson Slade.

The Fox and the Hound 2 soundtrack features a combination of country and bluegrass writers and performers who were discovered in Nashville by Disney. These include One Flew South who sing “Friends for Life” and the Singin Strays who perform “We Go Together” There are also performances by country icons like Trisha Yearwood and Reba McEntire.
