The Gladiator movie takes you back to the times of ancient Rome during the time of the Roman-Germanic wars and the fall and rise of the mighty and powerful Roman Empire. The Gladiator movie focuses on Maximus Decimus Meridius, played by Hollywood star Russell Crowe, whose wife and son are brutally murdered at the hands of the new Roman dictator Commodus (played by budding Hollywood star actor Joaquin Phoenix, who played the star role in Johnny Cash). Meridius (who had previously led the Roman army over Germanic forces) faints while grieving, upon which time he is taken by slave traders to a Gladiator training school (headed by the legendary Proximo) in North Africa. Motivated by the memory of his slain wife and daughter, Meridius fights his way up the Gladiator ranks, gaining notice by the public, and the eye of the evil Commodus – who tries in different ways to fix battles to dispose of Meridius, who begins to threaten his popularity.

The Oscar-nominated Gladiator soundtrack took home the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score in 2000. The movie score, in particular, took the Hollywood film industry by storm as the masterpiece put together by Hans Zimmer set the tone for many ancient-time war films to follow. The Gladiator soundtrack was so popular, and, so successful – that the late legendary Italian singer Luciano Pavarotti expressed regret for not accepting a singing part in the Gladiator soundtrack.
