The Grease soundtrack, from Grease the movie was a stunning achievement and was a number one album in many countries after the Grease movie came out. The Grease film, based on the Grease musical on Broadway, was originally released in theaters in the United States in June 1978. It featured John Travolta, who was already a television star, and Australian singing sensation Olivia Newton-John. Jeff Conaway and Stockard Channing, two veteran Broadway actors, rounded out the cast.

The Grease story revolves around a summer relationship between two 1950s teens, Sandy and Danny. Sandy is supposed to go back to Australia after the summer, but winds up instead at the same school as Danny, where she is ostracized by Danny’s friends, who think she isn’t cool. Danny is torn between his interest in Sandy and his allegiance to his friends. Sandy and Danny compromise and get back together in the end.

The song "You're The One That I Want" on the Grease soundtrack became an instant hit when it was released as a single prior to the film's release. This was despite the fact that it wasn’t even in the Grease musical. In Great Britain, the two Travolta/Newton-John duets, "You're The One That I Want" and "Summer Nights", were both number one hits. The song "Hopelessly Devoted to You" was nominated for an Academy Award (1979) for Best Music - Original Song. The Grease movie title song was also a number one smash hit single for Frankie Valli.
