The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack was recorded for the epic fantasy film based on the J.R.R. Tolkien’s Fellowship of the Ring book. The film, released in December 2001 to wide acclaim, was directed by Peter Jackson and starred Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen and Orlando Bloom. Today, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring movie is the 13th highest grossing film of all time. In 2007, The Fellowship of the Ring was voted number 50 on the American Film Institute's list of 100 greatest American films.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring film takes place in mythic pre-historic times, when a young hobbit named Frodo Baggins inherits a magic ring from his elderly cousin Bilbo. Wise to the powers that the magic ring holds, the dark Lord Sauron wants it, knowing it will enable him to enslave the people of Middle Earth. In his effort to thwart Sauron, Frodo recruits the fellowship of a wizard, an elf, a dwarf and others, on a mission to destroy the ring.

Informed with distinctly modern sensibilities, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack was composed by Howard Shore and performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The Wagnerian orchestral score has a sense of magical place and mystery about it and musically conveys the film’s time span of centuries.
