The Miami Vice soundtrack is just one element of the Miami Vice franchise, which began with the hit Miami Vice television series the 1980s. Billed as “MTV cops,” the series aired on NBC for five seasons and starred Don Johnson as James "Sonny" Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, two Miami police detectives working undercover. Miami Vice the movie was released in 2006 and starred Jamie Foxx as Ricardo Tubbs and Colin Farrell as James Crocket. Like the TV series, the Miami Vice movie was written and directed by Michael Mann.

In the Miami Vice film, Crockett and Tubbs work as undercover drug traffickers in an attempt to infiltrate a South American drug cartel After Crockett is drawn to a drug kingpin’s lover, and the two begin a romance, Tubbs begins to worry that Crockett may be getting too deeply involved in his undercover role.

The Miami Vice soundtrack doesn’t dwell on the eighties and has a completely up-to-date aesthetic. It includes dance-floor friendly excursions like "One of These Mornings" (a collaboration between Moby and Patti Labelle) and a house remix of Nina Simone’s "Sinnerman" by Felix da Housecat. Then there are the more atmospheric offerings, such as instrumentals from the Scottish band Mogwai and the last four tracks, which suggest the kind of pastel colored ambiance Mann is so good at creating.
