The Moulin Rouge soundtrack is an eclectic and delicious mix of cabaret, glam rock and trip hop. It goes with the Moulin Rouge the movie, which was released in June 2001 after an earlier debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the Moulin Rouge movie starred Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. It was nominated for eight Oscars, and won two; for art direction and costume design for the inspired Nichole Kidman Moulin Rouge costumes. The film is generally credited with reinvigorating the genre of movie musicals.

Moulin Rouge the movie tells the story of a young, impoverished British poet/writer, Christian, who falls in love with the star of the Moulin Rouge cabaret actress and courtesan, Satine. With the colorful musical setting of the Montmartre Quarter of Paris, France, as a backdrop for the action, Satine mistakes Christian for a rich Duke and is shocked to find out that he is actually a penniless bohemian. Nevertheless, the two make a plan to run away together.

The Moulin Rouge soundtrack features Nicole Kidman becoming the latest pop sensation with brilliant renditions of “One Day I’ll Fly Away” and the “Elephant Love Medley”. There’s also a splash of David Bowie and Bono in the Moulin Rouge lyrics, while Pattie LaBelle's '70s staple "Lady Marmalade" is remade by an all-star cast of divas, including Lil' Kim and Christina Aguilera.
