The Pretty Woman soundtrack turned out to be just as successful as the movie itself, which was released in 1990. Pretty Woman the movie was initially intended to be a dark drama about prostitution in Los Angeles, but was recast as a light romantic comedy when Julia Roberts and Richard Gere signed on to co-star. The Pretty Woman film netted Roberts a Golden Globe for Best Actress and an Oscar nomination.

The Pretty Woman movie centers around Vivian Ward, a down-on-her-luck prostitute with a heart of gold. Ward is hired by an exceedingly wealthy business man, Edward Lewis, played by Richard Gere, to be his escort for several business functions. Their relationship develops and Lewis ultimately falls in love with Ward and turns out be her knight in shining armor.

The Pretty Woman soundtrack features Roy Orbison’s fresh-sounding “Oh, Pretty Woman,” as well as David Bowie’s updated version of “Fame 90.” Much of the album is a snapshot of up-and-coming acts at the beginning of the 90s, with Go West's massive hit, "King Of Wishful Thinking" and Roxette's chart topper "It Must Have Been Love" setting the agenda for slick, well produced power-pop.
