More about the RENT soundtrack
The Rent soundtrack captures the groundbreaking rock musical’s phenomenal songs. With music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, Rent the Broadway play opened at the Nederlander Theater in April 1996 to critical acclaim and much good word of mouth buzz. The Broadway play Rent has since been enormously successful, racking up more than 4,000 performances and still running. In 2005, Rent the play, was adapted into a movie version. The original Rent Broadway cast came together at the Nederlander Theatre on April 24, 2006, to stage a performance for the rock opera's tenth anniversary.
Based on Giacomo Puccini's opera, La Bohème, Rent the Broadway play focused on a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in the last days of the Bohemian East Village of New York City, just as the AIDS epidemic was hitting. The Broadway play Rent was the first musical to openly portray the lives of gays, transsexuals and transgender people and became the musical and film that spoke directly to Generation X.
The two-disc Rent soundtrack was released in September 2005 and contained all of the hit songs from the Broadway musical, including “Seasons of Love,” which reached #33 on Billboard’s Hot One Hundred Singles Chart. The tune was also made into a music video, released on Apple’s QuickTime website. Other Rent songs like “One Song Glory” and “Will I?” beautifully captured the mesmerizing brilliance of the Rent film musical.
