The Superman soundtrack features a dramatic, heroic musical score that perfectly accompanies the action for Superman the movie. The Superman film, released in 1978, was the first ever film adaptation of a comic book superhero. It was directed by Richard Donner, with music by the legendary film composer John Williams. It starred top-billed Marlon Brando as Jor-El, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor and Christopher Reeve as Superman.

The Superman film story is about an alien orphan who is sent from his dying planet to Earth, where he grows up to become his adoptive home's first and greatest superhero, battling the evil Lex Luther and his plan to sabotage a pair of nuclear missiles and use them to create an earthquake that will wipe out the California coastline. In the Superman movie, Superman races against time to stop the sinister plot and ultimately saves millions of innocent people.

John Williams leads a majestic London Symphony Orchestra in the triumphant Superman soundtrack. The score ranges from the rousing and exciting “Superman Theme” song, featuring a boisterous brass section, to the romantic and graceful love theme for Lois and Clark and the darkly humorous march for Lex Luthor. The "Superman Theme", which is first heard during the opening credits to the Superman movie, has been reused (with varying arrangements) as the opening music for every Superman film made since.
